ALMOST ALL OF US HAVE BEEN FACED WITH CERTAIN OBJECTS IN OUR DAILY LIVES THAT WE CANNOT DETACH OURSELVES FROM, EVEN WHILE WE REMAIN AWARE OF THEIR ARTIFICIALITY. ALTHOUGH THEY HAVE BECOME IMPRACTICAL, THEY STAND IN AS PART OF OUR PAST AND HELP CREATE THE IMAGE THAT WE PORTRAY OF OURSELVES TO THE WORLD.
SOUVENIRS, PHOTOGRAPHS OF A DIFFERENT TIME AND PLACE... THE SENTIMENTAL VALUE OF THINGS SEEMS TO ASSERT ITSELF WHENEVER WE ARE FACED WITH A MOMENT OF PASSAGE IN OUR JOURNEY AS AN INDIVIDUAL. THESE OBJECTS, THAT I LIKE TO REFER TO AS “KEYS TO A PAST TIME”, LOOM BETWEEN THE AMBIGUOUS FEELINGS OF LONGING FOR THE PAST AND THE YEARNING FOR A NEW BEGINNING. EVER SO OFTEN, AN UNCANNY SENSATION ARISES WHEN WE EXPERIENCE THESE OBJECTS, A CERTAIN UNFAMILIAR FEELING WITHIN THE FAMILIAR, IN WHICH WHAT WERE ONCE OBJECTS OF ADORATION BECOME DISTANT AND HAUNTING. IT IS THIS UNCANNY FEELING THAT I TRY TO TRANSLATE INTO THE LANGUAGE OF PAINTING.
